For a director who had such an impact with Martyrs (2008) it seems strange that Pascal Laugier’s career has somewhat stalled. A muted response to his English-language film The Tall Man (2012) was perhaps the result of disappointment to those who yearned for the brutality of Martyrs and while his ‘extreme’ European peers were taking on other projects (to varying success), Laugier seemed to withdraw from many projects – most crucially a potential Hellraiser reboot.
I have made no secret of how much I love Martyrs (you can read my piece on the 10th Anniversary of the film here) and so I am absolutely thrilled that Laugier is returning with his new work, Incident in a Ghostland (slightly renamed from Ghostland). To add to that excitement, cult film champions Arrow Video are set to release a DVD and Blu-Ray set complete with extras.
The film’s synopsis and the Special Edition Blu-Ray Contents are listed below:
The subject of a brutal home invasion along with her mother and sister several years ago, horror novelist Beth has found solace in her writing – detailing the harrowing ordeal in her latest book, “Incident in a Ghostland”. But when she receives a call from her sister Vera, apparently in a state of extreme distress, Beth is prompted to return to the isolated family home where the terrifying truth of that awful night soon begins to unravel…

The trailer hints at a return to the female-led intensity of Martyrs and follows the tradition of Laugier tales in incorporating time-jumps, supernatural suggestions and the lingering damage caused by guilt, grief and secrets. Laugier’s method of storytelling greatly appeals to me so I have really high hopes for this one.
